Perhaps, but keep in mind that Ringo didn't need to be asked twice so "stole" is maybe not the exact right word. Snached? Plucked? Rescued? As he said at the time, the Beatles "were a much better band" (than the Hurricanes).

Either way, I imagine that Rory Storm was none too happy when it happened.
