On second thought as your clue was Britain it has to be associated with a British Artist, it looks early sixties/Late Fifties to me, so I am going to go with that it belonged to Tommy Steele

Not Tommy Steele Roy, but you have identified the time-frame and as such are narrowing in on the answer.
