what kind of strings are these?

On the newly aquired 72 it has roundwounds that have different color [balls] this doesnt sound good[the things that hold the string in the bridge.Colors are red,black,green,brass[plain]they have no felt.what kind of strings are these?? they feel good.

They are D'Addario Chromes I believe Ken.

All D'Addario's have the rainbow balls. The '77 I got from Lindsay had XL's (rounds) on it.

I second the thought about them feeling great... when I removed the P/U cover I restrung it with Spector's and I can't stand them!

They are D'Addario XL's if they are roundwounds. The Chromes are flatwound strings, which are quite good sounding strings IMHO. I use them on my V63 and will put them on my C64 when it comes.

interesting... a while back I brought my (then new to me) ric to a local music store to get wired/setup and I asked for 45-105 rotosounds. They gave me strings that match what you described ken. They also tried to wire my ric like a les paul.

That store has not been allowed to touch one of my basses since.

Any reason anyone can think of for color coding strings? Does D'Addario really think anyone who plays bass could mistake a G for an E? On guitar, it might help avoid confusing a high E for a B, but I think bass is more obvious, no?

They do it with guitar strings, too. Maybe they don't trust the packaging department at the factory?

They sound like D'Addario XL's. Very good strings, I've used them for years, and for what its worth, highly recommend them.

As for the multi-colored ball ends, I dunno, its just their thing.

..yeah, even the new D'Addario Pro Steels have the multi-colors ball ends. I guess that's to help you find each string easier since they have not been packed in separate individual paper envelopes.

If these rounds are anything like the Chromes Flats, they will be superb strings. The Chromes flats also have the different anchoring balls as others have noted.

I just put on a set of XL-165's, 45-105. Love the sound. How would you describe the difference between the 170's and the 165's? I figured the 105 would be a bit deeper than the 100. The 165's did bow my neck more than Pyramid flats, didn't expect that, but I adjusted the rods.
