"12" Step country

Post by tito »

I have recently seen a few guitarist in Country Bands using Rick 360/12's. It made me think. . ."are Ricks used by many county musicians?"

Does anyone have some insight and information to help me answer my question?

Yeah, some county musicians, but mostly municipal.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Seriously, I've noticed that recently. For years it was mostly brit rock/pop. I don't know why, but now it seems more country artists use rics, maybe it's jangle and twang -- twangle?

Raul Malo of The Mavericks has used one (360/12 or 370/12, as has Mary Chapin Carpenter (a 620/12 with the original BlueBurst finish).

On a slightly related note, Dwight Yoakum is playing two different Casinos in his latest video ("Intentional Heartache").

I was listening to a country station today (somewhere between Houston & Dallas) and they played a song that had the line "Roger McGuinn and his 12 string, a sound we've never heard." The station never mentioned the song or the artist after playing it.

I just spoke to Dwight's guitar tech, Steve Moore, and according to him, Dwight has 2 (1 Jet-Glo and 1 Fire-Glo) 360/6's. He hasn't used them in a while. Steve said the last time was for the FAST AS YOU video shoot with the Fire-Glo. He may not use them, but he won't sell them either!

That's the lowdown on DY's Rickenbackers.

If memory serves me right, DY used the 360 FG in the video of "Honky Tonk Man".

I also think a 360 was featured in Alan Jackson's video of "Mercury Blues".

Oh, sorry....I came to this thread thinking I would find info on a 12-Step program to rid myself of country-and-western music. Guess I'm mistaken.......NOT! ;>)

As I have mentioned before, Gurf Morlix, a former guitarist with Lucinda Williams, used a JetGlo 330/6. Don't know if he ever used a 12. I saw them on Austin City Limits years back and it was his tone through a tube amp that first got me interested in Rics.

Then there is Buck Owens.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

James, there is a DVD of Lucinda Williams from the "Car Wheels" tour, back in 1998, live from Austin City Limits. Is this the same show you saw ? You can look it up at amazon.com.

I saw a Buck Owens signature American flag Telecaster in a local pawn shop this spring, reasonably priced...went back the next day and she was gone...

I ain't normally one to wave the flag, but that thing was cool...
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...
