Does anyone else feel that the new "1" album is another attempt to wring money out of people?
I mean, at least the Anthology and BBC sessions were of historical value. Capitol has repackaged
these songs 3 different times now. I even question the timing of their Anthology Book. Surely it was done w/marketing in mind, but what's changed in the 4 years since the Anthology records came out, why wait 'til now? Are the surviving three so cozy with Yokoinc. that they had to write about it?
I guess the ice queen need some more Beatific cash
to live off of. Wasn't it John who said "avante garde is french for ********."?
Also, I find it tastless that there are actually phone in orders available for "1" just like every other repackaged piece of **** out there. As a Beatle fan I was always proud that the Beatles(and Zeppelin who finally wilted, I guess they ****** away their savings in the fickle 80's) never pandered to cheesy TV compilation discs.
I'm not impugning their ability, these songs were #1's and I love them all. I guess I just realized that although we tend to cannonize the Beatles as saints, the Rutles will have the final words:
All you need is cash.

I think it's probably aimed at a new market, younger people who have heard of the Beatles and their influence on modern music and who want to get the "flavour" of Beatlemania in one package - consequently it's marketed the modern way. And it was always about money, period.

On a different subject, why has this board changed around with all the posts no longer in date order? Is one of the ECC83's in my ancient PC about to give up ?

If I'm not mistaken, the ECC83 is a tube.
Do you have a vintage Vox PC-30?

Ron: While "the best things in life are free", this is indeed another attempt to make money. Over the years, marketing has become much more efficient. Had the Beatles been able to use techniques available today in the 1960's goodness knows how high their record sales might have been. I do agree with you but at the same time really enjoy hearing about the Fab Four in the press and getting the chance to relive the 1960's again through the eyes of a younger generation. To be this successful, yet again, is remarkable.

I guess I'm just peeved because there's nothing new. The Anthology was simply incredible to a true Beatle fan. I spent months reading Lewisohn's "Beatles Recording Sessions" and listening to the alternate takes. It was like rediscovering the Beatles.
You are correct that the Beatles' succcess is, even today, simply awesome.

Ron: Your point was well taken. Let's hope that they find some more tapes in a vault somewhere that will let us enjoy new recordings, in whatever state they may be, to subject to further analyses. Do you suppose we might be treated to a Rutles Anthology?

I'm not going to buy it as a protest against "Please Please Me" being left out. I just don't understand the logic - it was the most significant #1 of all for British fans, as it was the first time most of us got to hear of the existence of the Beatles ("Love Me Do" didn't get any airplay outside the Liverpool area). It made #1 in 2 out of the 3 UK chart listings, and it's a great song.

I don't suppose my boycott will much worry the money-men though, and I won't be surprised at all if it appears in my Xmas stocking !

Peter: Well we asked Stig, but true to form he wouldn't give us an answer so....
I'd be willing to bet their are some tapes in those vaults somewhere. I wish the Beatles were as prolific from the grave as Jimi Hendrix is/was. I'd like to hear the complete Star Club Tapes from 1962 or even audio of the Granada TV performance. Plus, I'm sure there is some interesting stuff from the "Let it Be" sessions that didn't make the cut.
The comment regarding "Please Please Me" was accurate. Especially since that was their first
#1. It contradicts the idea of "1"'s.

There's looooooooads of old Beatle material available for them to release. Last month I picked up a 17-disk (20-hours) set of just Let it Be out-takes. I would think that the amount of material that has made it out to the underground market would be just a fraction of what is available in the EMI vaults.

If they all farted on record, would there be any interest???
Some (most) of it is sub par and out of tune. Thats why it never got out in the first place!

Thank you "Anonymous". Other than the Hollywood Bowl recordings, what else is left? Maybe what is available, just isn't any good. They would be the best judge of that. I agree that this compilation is just another attempt at making a buck, but the album has gone to number 1 in a billion countries already, so someone wants to hear it again. The best way to voice your dissatisfaction is to simply, not buy the album.
