To the best of my knowledge, North American goods should be able to cross borders within North America duty free under NAFTA. But, if I bring an instrument from the states into Canada, I will be charged a brokerage fee by the shipping company as well as provincial and federal sales tax based on the declared value of the instrument. Ken, Capsule Music couldn't have charged you "duty" as that is assessed as it goes through US Customs, and it shouldn't have applied anyways as Rickenbackers are manufactured in the US. Perhaps it was a brokerage charge you saw. As far as the 400LK in Germany goes, you may have to pay duty on it even if it's manufactured in the US, but this will lie with US Customs rather than Germany.

Correction, looking back now it was UPS, the shipping was paid they would not release the bass unless i paid duty on it.

Hmmm... that price makes the one I saw a few years ago posted by a dealer for at $3500 (considered outrageous at the tme) a real bargain ...

hmmm....good job by my Ebay watchlist :-(.......

I received a 2nd chance offer on it yesterday and deleted it since I assumed it was a fraud. Oh well......I just bought a new laptop anyway so it is probably for the best.

I have bought 2 different basses off Ebay from 2 different sellers located in Germany and Fed Ex. delevered them right to my door, I didn't have to pay any duties tax to get them. I've often wondered how the duties tax works.
