Longbranch Pennywhistle

Post by admin »

I have never heard Longbranch Pennywhistle who released an album in 1969. I am interested if others recall this group. One of the members of this duo was J. D. Souther who has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Of one thing there is no mystery, however, that of his song writing and vocal talent.

Perhaps one of my favourite recordings of J. D. Souther is a song he made with James Taylor in 1981 called Her Town Too. I would be interested in your thoughts regarding Souther's work.

HER TOWN TOO is one of my favorites, mainly because of Souther's vocals. He's like the coolest guy on the planet. I once saw him at Liberty Hall (club) in Houston in the late 70s when YOU'RE ONLY LONELY came out. The small club's air conditioning had gone out and the crowd was sweltering from the summer heat and humidity. Souther played solo and didn't sweat A DROP. The James Dean of west coast country/pop!
Longbranch Pennywhistle was only a duo- Souther and Glenn Frey of the Eagles. Frey described them as a 'wacky little folk duo'. I had their one album, and though I admire both guys tremendously, the album didn't really work for me. Their occasional collaboration later during The Eagles heyday was much more fruitful. You're not really missing anything, Peter.

For a bit of a UK connection here, how about this poser. JD Souther would be asked to assist a Glasgowian born recording artist in the early 1990s. Who was he? While we are focused on Europe, Souther also did some serious work with a group from Ireland. What was the group and the track?

Tough one there, Peter. I just know of some other Peter,(but from England), who produced Souther's "Black Rose". The only close association I can think of is Waller who was from Scotland. But I don't think it was Glasgow.

Not Gerry Rafferty Roy. I hope this won't be one of those posers in which we disagree.

Perhaps a search for the criminal mind is in order.
