Thanks Roy,
I guess it may be of marginal interest to go into detail, but the track sequence on "LM" is entirely different to that on "PFT".
I can't help but wonder that, IF the SIRE comeback LP had been called PLAY FOR TODAY(very clever title to promote a veteran act showing their ability to kick off contemporary music), IF it had been promoted decently, and IF it had contained in essence the material from their second SIRE record, wouldn't or couldn't it have given THE SEARCHERS a return to chart success?
I believe so. A pity it didn't happen.

In a string of good songs and clever choices for PFT/LM, I rate Everything But A Heartbeat as my No 1. This was one of two songs originating from The Kursaal Flyers (Will Birch and another member whose name slips my mind). Their other contribution (Radio Romance(?) also an excellent choice. Also the Alex Chilton song September Gurls is fitting superbly. The inclusion of Fogerty's great Almost Saturday Night is a more obvious choice, the song being better known. But most of the other material, more or less obscure songs. Did the Searchers find these songs themselves, or did they have clever backmen? A great pity that all the good work (Song selection and band performances) was not followed up by more efforts in the field of marketing!

Searchers amongst my teenage favourite music. Still fond of them, but earnestly a little puzzled they are considered THIS big! But I'm very excited about this forum, and will love to read it regularly, and also contribute!

Some good points Einar. I often think the titles of both albums were poor.

The Searchers - NOW could have been the first and perhaps The Searchers Playing For Today instead of The Searchers Play For Today a salient difference in my view, could have been the second.
I'm sure you could be right about Will Birch being in Kursall Flyers, but he was in The Records and co-wrote Hearts in Her Eyes, which was the comeback single for The Searchers. He also recorded that track with The Records

Hi!
Slightly off the Record:
Will Birch co-wrote Radio Romance and Everything but a Heartbeat with different co-members of the Kursaal Flyers. Both songs also recorded by them (in much the same style as the Searchers did them). KF then broke up, and Will Birch joined (or founded) The Records. Then co-wrote Hearts In Her Eyes. This means (I'm quite sure of) that
Hearts In Her Eyes is the newer of the three songs, although the Searchers found that one first.
I should like to know the story about how the Searchers found these hidden treasures to record!

So would I Einar. Roy, perhaps Einar's queries could go on your fans' list of questions for The Searchers.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I will cetainly consider asking the question, if time permits, as the choice of questions will not all be mine and consideration to some degree has to be given to those attending who may want questions answered, but I will try and slot them in. I actually think the answer lies in Pat Moran who produced the albums, I'm sure he was influential in what they recorded.

As a afterthought Einar seeing you are a Kursall Flyers fan, have to admit only song I recall of theirs was Little Does She Know. Was Will Birch with them then.

Roy &,

I used to follow the rock scene quite intensely as far as the late seventies. Some of these details still stick with me, but that is pure routine. Searchers were my childhood heroes (well, Beatles obviously, but you tend to find other heroes than the Goliaths), Kursaal Flyers (with two a's!!) is only one of a lot in my memory base, and I have some books to consult to check if I remember the facts as well as I think I do! Birch was their drummer! and with them all of their times (they re-formed once or twice).
-A lot of talent there, Graeme Douglas was another KF, went on to join Eddie and the Hot Rods, and wrote their terrific Do Anything You Wanna Do.
I think you are right about remembering Little Does She Know, and only that one. Kursaal Flyers was not a regular feature on your neighbour's record player, I guess! AND THIS STRESSES THE POINT: How did the Searchers find such good and rather obscure songs?! (Moran may well be the man!)

"She's got the smile of sunshine/On a cloudy day".
(Everything but a heartbeat- Will Birch and Ritchie Bull- Kursaal Flyers).
