Beatles No 1 CD

Post by carr »

Ive just realised after many many playings that my copy of the NO1 Cd does not have "Please Please Me "on it.

This prompts the question......

Is this an oversight or have I bought a rip off copy ( from a reputable dealer)?

John: This is an observation that has been made by many and has been sufficient in some cases to have some boycott the purchase. The research with regard to the chart position is as follows:

Original release date: 22-03-63
Producer(s): George Martin/(Ron Richards)
Engineer(s): Norman Smith
Mix: George Martin
Original record label: Parlophone
Original record number: PMC 1202/PMS 3042
Original medium: LP
Disc, Disc Weekly chart rating: 1
Melody Maker chart rating: 1
New Musical Express chart rating: 1
Record Retailer chart rating: 1

So just what rating system was used in the case of selecting songs for this release? Good question.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Well my issue with this CD is ....what country were these songs number one in?

Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever only hit #2 in the UK .

The Long and Winding Road a number 1???Really?

That said .. the sound is terrifficcccc!!!!!

But that brings up a new question...that is this- Since these #1 songs were remixed from the mulittracked tape/recordings, does this mean that the REST of the WHOLE beatles catalog will be remixed? If so ...When?

I hope so .
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

I share your hopes on that, Mark. But are you sure those are remixes? They sound the same as the old mixes to me, although they are much better transfers than the original CDs, and they used the stereo mixes where available.

If you have a 5.1 surround system with your DVD player, you owe it to yourself to get the Yellow Submarine DVD. The 5.1 mixes on that are a revelation.

I also like the Wings Band on the Run & Venus and Mars 5.1 CDs. Although unexplicably, the first riff is missing on the title track of BotR.

I may have an answer to the "Please, Please Me", ommission. It may be something as simple as publishing rights. As you are aware the majority of the Lennon/McCartney songs are published by Northern Songs, currently owned by Michael Jackson. "Love Me Do" is owned by MPL Communications, which is Paul's publishing company. However, "Please, Please Me" is owned by Dick James Publishing. Dick was the original publisher of the Lennon/McCartney songs. It's possible that when Northen Songs was formed "Please, Please Me" wasn't transferred over. It's possible that either the rights could not be obtained or Apple/Capitol did not want to pay the publishing rights. This is merely specualtion, but it's the only logical reason I can think of to not include their first number 1 song.

I was told by Tim Kik of Just Another Beatles Page that in fact Record Retailer which was the "charts bible" in those days did not place "Please Please Me" at No.1 which is the reason for its surprising (to most of us) omission.I believe the Searchers were similarly affected with their hit "Sugar and Spice" thus being deprived of an opening string of four consecutive number 1's in the 60's.

i find it difficult to believe that they wouldn't include it because it wasn't number one on that particular chart. I think the concept is that if it reached number 1 anywhere, it would be placed on the album. I guess you could be right but that seems that if it reached the top spot on Melody Maker, then it weould be on the album. Who knows?

Isn't "Rain" arguably an even more notable exception from the No 1 CD ?
"But the man has a 47-string guitar." (Grace Slick on Paul Kantner's attempt to tune his 366/12 during a Winterland show of October 31 1969).

I would think that the more songs the better, as far as sales go. Most people buying it don't know or care if the songs hit No.1, I would think. To me, all things go back to the all mighty dollar (or insert your favorite currency here): (1.) Make more money with more songs, or (2.)cut out songs because it costs too much to put them on (licensing or paying royalties?), or someone won't let you use it. I think someone chose to omit a song or two, and I agree with Brian.

I didn't do the math, but I would think that with the length of the average Beatle song, a few more could fit on the cd.

Rain was a "B" side and inthose days "B" sides were ranked seperately. Rain did not reach number 1 on either side of the Atlantic.

You're right Brian. Rain was not, as I'd thought, a double "A" side with Paperback Writer.
