More money for Ric basses

Post by charlyg »

I know it's a stretch, but I wanted to tell you guys about my new gig. I'm working for the Universal Music Group in IT-Desktop Support. I switched out a fellow's keyboard and got a free Hendrix DVD! Cool stuff, and a 12 buck an hour raise.

Right now I'm a temp backfill for a project that lasts til Christmas. After the first week, they asked if I would like an app for a permanent gig.
Whatcha think? {:^)

D'oh!

Dude, I work for Universal Music! I actually have for 10 years (uh, with a slight layoff/hiatus last year). I do Artist Development for Island/Def Jam Records in the southeast.
I'm on the phone with the help desk all of the time.
Have you met Linda Richards or Amy O'Neill yet?

Small freakin' world.

Yup, it is a small world. I'm working in Santa Monica. Nope, those two names haven't come up yet.

They're in Universal City. You'll probably hear from them soon.
Good luck & congrats.

Charly & Chris - I used to be a TV development executive at Universal in the 197^%$#'s. Had an office in the "Black Tower." Boy has that place changed!

Charlie - have, uh, "fun" doing Desktop IT support - putting out all those fires, day in, day out! (Hopefully it will be better than doing it for a law firm, which I did, plus doing network admin, and it was NO fun....but that was a law firm!) Good luck! Image

I actually love desktop support! I did some rollouts at law firms that weren't too bad. I guess maybe it was because I had NEW equipment for them!

I need to finish my "Project" first, Joey!

Charly - yeah, I was dealing mostly with old equipment running Win98, so it sucked! That OS was never meant to be used in a corporate environment, as it was bad enough for the average home user! I did manage to help get them weaned off the Netware server, and onto Win2000 server....and strangely enough (NOT!), things were smoother after that....! Also had some new machines come in, which were all WinXP Pro boxes, and they ran very well, though law firms do have their specialized apps that didn't particularly like XP at the time (4 years ago now)....I would imagine that's changed by now.

IT can be a relatively hard or easy gig. There are definite fire times, but if (big IF) you can develop things you sometimes get long periods where systems work well.

I think I'm ending one of those. My office (where I've developed their database applications) is set to grow from about a dozen folk to about 50 before the end of the year.

Can you say "SQL Server Migration"? Image I'm sure there will be fires...

Good luck Charley! Image
