When did grover tuners stop?

Post by johnnyb »

Hey kids, can anyone please tell me when grover tuners stopped being put on Rick basses.

I think it was the 80's ...

Geddy ended up removing them from his basses because they fell apart and didn't stay in tune ...

I think it's way before the 80's. My '71 has them but the '76 doesn't. The RIC 1975 catalog photos also don't look like Grovers.

I have seen them on only the 4080 model, as late as 1980. Not to say that other models didn't have them.

Since we're on the subject, are we talking about the Grover Wavy Tuners? Or just Grover Tuners in general, with different appearances?

As for the wavy-type tuners, what exactly were the years used? ImageImage

My 73 4001's have the wavy Grovers. The guitar version was called "Imperial." Grover doesn't seem to make the bass version any more.

Classy looking tuners, even if they did come loose now and then.

I think it's hit and miss with grover tuners up till the 80's. My 75 4001 had them. As we all know there are lots of variables and odditys associated with Ricks between 1970-1980.
