Which 12 string should I get?

Post by kcole4001 »

If my 4080 bid doesn't win I'm going to get a Midnight Blue 4003 from Musician's friend. I thought it would be great to get a 12 as well. They have a JG 360/12 in stock & a FG 620/12 due in in 2-4 weeks. Which would be better for a 12 string newbie? Their prices are quite both good.

360/12 is the yardstick by which all others are measured.

The necks are the same width, so no issues there. I agree with Noel, a thinline 330 or 360-12 is THE classic Ric 12 string sound.

Still best to sit down with both for a few minutes & see which you prefer.
'Rickenbacker'...what a name! After all these years, it still thrills me.

Kevin, you're going to get good arguments for either model. I prefer the 360 ( I have a 660)but if you would be more comfortable with a solid body then the 620 might be the way to go. It all comes down to personal preference.

Some people say that the 330 has a bit more room on the fretboard because there is no binding on the neck.I don't know if this is true or not as I have only played my 330-12 which I find comfy.I have a 1983 620-6 which has a thinner neck than my 330.If new 620's have necks that narrow a 620-12 may be more challenging.

Thanks for the opinions, all! It's a tough choice, but I'm sure I'd love either of the two.

Howdy,

I've had a 330-12 and was disappointed with it's relative lack of sustain and treble.
Recently I bought a 620-12 and its' got more treble and sustain. Gimme the 620-12!

660/12, unless you have smaller hands.

second on the 660/12.
i have small hands and i could never get used to
the tightness of the string spacing. i traded it
to another member for a 330/6 and am much
happier. but i really miss the sound of that 12er.
may have to get a 660 someday.
good luck

I went through the normal iterations with my 360/12; 12-saddle bridge, vintage knobs, toasters, and a new nut. If you don't know a real good luthier, go with the 660. FG would be my preference.

Third the 660, although color choice really should be left up to the purchaser, don'tcha think? Har!

I'm firmly in the 360 camp - particularly as I'll be purchasing one myself in a few short months.

I've got fairly small hands so I'm not too fussed about the string spacing. Also, I just prefer the shape of the 300 series. I've never been able to fall for that crested wave shape.

Crested wave trumps toilet seat.

IMHO, LOL, and all those pithy acronymic thingies.

I actually do like it. Just don't love the body styling, although most seem to see it as the "classic" Rick. The first Rick I ever played was a then-"new style" 360, must've been '65 or so. It HOOKED ME on Ricks.

Now, an "old style" (double-bound) 360 really gets my blood going. Love'em and hope to score one soon.

Just a prejudice of mine, that's all.

Can I have some Fig Newtons with the milk, please? (Or maybe I just need some bran flakes or sumthin')
