I've become one with my Rickenbacker

Post by highway_star »

Ever have one of those nights where everything just works out the right way? That happened last Friday night at band practice. I've just installed a Hipshot tailpiece and DR Fat Beams on my Fireglo 4003 (aka, The Red Baron) and did a rough setup. Well I think I got the setup just good enough since there were no rattles and the bass virtually played itself at practice. I felt like I was on auto pilot a few times and took the liberty of attempting some backing vocals. Surprisingly, the dog didn't howl and the neighbors didn't file any noise complaints. But the bass felt so good that I had an increased level of confidence. I bought this bass with the intent of being my #1 gigging bass and it didn't disappoint.

I bet there was a beam of light descending directly down upon you...lol!!

I've had that feeling a few times....it's the ONLY time I sing backing vocals as it's a real chore for me to play and sing at the same time....but SOMETIMES, it just clicks....

Actually, the last time I felt that way was with the 4004L / FG that I sold a while back....hmmmmm...

If there was a beam of light on me, it was probably from the laser sight of someone's rifle.

Over the years, I would get that same feeling and then I finally discovered why I felt "one with the bass". I was holding the pic just right between my thumb and forefinger and was making contact between the string and the side of my right thumb. It only took about 20 years to figure this out! Apparently Squire does this too.

Ron,

I got through my first Ric (74) , sold it, then Overwaters, Fenders and Musican till I went full circle & got back to Rickenbacker. I now own 5, 2 of which I gig with . The others are kind of a pension fund that I use for the odd recording & rehearsal.

I think that the Ric has made me more stylised, a good thing in my book. I now sound like ME not anyone else. I am now hankering after a fretless as my direction is getting jazzier. It will be a mid-late 70's 4001, when I find it.

I recently sold my MM and Fender J & aside from a bit of a gulp when they were sent away I haven't missed them at all.
