When you can buy a brand new 4003 for $1100 +/- Why would anybody spend more than $1100 for 30 year old 4001? A 70's 4001 neck is stressed beyond its design specs simply by putting roundwound strings on it, and if the truss rod is adjusted improperly the fretboard pops off. For my money I'll take a brand new 4003.

I agree.......but people do pay that much so that is what it is worth on the market. My two 4003's sold for $900-ish.....I don't understand why people would pay that but it is OK with me.

Personally, I have a big problem with the current neck profile of the 4003. I don't like the feel of it.
I'd pay more to have a thinner profile neck, even if it means that I buy a 30 yr old 4001.
My god, I did exactly that a number of years ago! Plus I paid more for my 4001 than I could have bought a new 4003 for.
I have no regrets. My 4001 is a outstanding bass.
In addition I only use roundwound strings on my 4001 and the neck is perfect! What stress?
To each his own my friends.

Yeah and for me it just feels better to have a 4001. All the bassist which i think have a nice sound played with a Ric 4001. But there weren't any 4003's in that time, but it just feels cool. And by the way, here in Holland a new 4003 cost 1500 euro and i can get this 4001 for just 800 euro. I think it's great. It will be my first Ric, probably not my last
@Jon: Which roundwounds do you use?

Okay i have a question guys. Whats the big difference between roundwounds and flatwounds when it comes to stress? I dont see why there would be that big of a difference. And my teachers 70s 4001 that he got brand new back in the day has roundwounds on it. As far as i know its never had anything else on it. It plays perfect. Infact its one of the best basses iv ever played. I just dont get it lol.
I dont like the new 4003s. Iv only played a few but they didnt do it for me i guess.
