Somewhat surprising, but not overly much. Anyone who's interested should read his book on Pete Townshend, "Behind Blue Eyes". Giuliano admits to an embarrassing incident whereby he steals several reels of Pete's extremely private musical recordings. Giuliano was staying as a guest of Pete's in some type of apartment over in London, and was given very explicit instructions NOT to go into a particular room. Well, Giuliano's curiosity got the best of him and he went into it one night and discovered the tapes. He smuggled the tapes out and took them to the house of a friend who lived about an hour's drive away. The friend was highly unimpressed by Giuliano's chutzpah and didn't do much to hide it.
Anyway, it didn't take Townshend very long at all to discover that the tapes were missing. When Giuliano returned later on, he found all of his belongings neatly arranged on the sidewalk outside of the building, obviously indicating he was no longer welcome there. Pete's personal secretary inside stonewalled Giuliano for an explanation and said he would have to wait for Mr. Townshend to show up.
When Pete got there he gave Giuliano a chance to come clean. Incredibly, Giuliano at first weakly denied it, thereby sending Pete into a spluttering rage. To quote Townshend: "Not only are you a c*nt. You're a LYING c*nt!"
What makes this account even more galling is that Giuliano never reveals the ultimate fate of the stolen tapes. Whether they remained at the house of the unnamed friend, or whether Giuliano himself kept them, or if something else happened to them (they certainly never made it back to Pete), is never mentioned.
Being a tremendously huge Townshend fan myself, I can easily identify with Giuliano's curiosity. But I would NEVER, EVER in a million years have the brass to do what he did. At most, I would've inquired very quietly, discreetly, and politely of Pete himself if he had any secret recordings he would be gracious enough to let me in on. And that would've been the extent of it. If he refused then certainly it would be a huge disappointment, but the only real choice would be to respect his decision and then let it go. Giuliano was a guest of Townshend at little or no expense to himself when this debacle happened and what he did would be pretty much unforgivable in my book.
