330 - 360 questions

Post by dimitris »

Hello,

I'm going to buy my first Rick guitar and being between 330/6 and 360/6 I've got some questions..

1)330 has no "neck-binding", 360 does. What's neck-binding? Is it something of importance?

2)330 has no stereo output, 360 does. Is stereo output something really useful for a player?

Basically, I find 330 having a much more killer look than 360, and will cost me 300 euros less. (from www.thomann.de). What's your advice?

3)Is the 340&370's third pickup a useful addition? I don't play metal, or other really heavy stuff...

4)I'm relatively tall, so I have big hands with long -but not fat- fingers. Do big handed guys have really got a problem playing a 300series rick?

Thanks in advance,

Dimitris

Dimitris: Welcome to The Rickenbacker Forum. It is nice to hear from someone from Greece.

The neck binding is an edging that finishes off the neck by covering the edges of the frets. It is smooth to the touch and attractive. For your first Rickenbacker my view is that you can do without it.

I don't think you will miss the stereo-outputs, I seldom use mine and have love the sound through the mono jack.

I consider that a 330 with two pickups is ideal.

With a six string Rickenbacker, I do not think that long fingers is a problem at all.

I hope this helps. I would go with the Model 330.

Let's see what others have to say on this.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

A big welcome from me also, Dimitris. I think Peter has given you the best advice possible. Given that you have large hands, the slightly deeper (not wider) neck on the 330 would suit you just fine.

Just for the record, my first Rickenbacker was a 330/6 and it will always hold the most special place in my collection.

Looking forward to many more posts from the beautiful city of Athens!

Welcome Dimitris. The 330 has the killer Ric sound & the killer Ric looks, you just can't go wrong with a 330. They are my favourite gtr. As far as the extra pick up goes, I retro fit a third pick up to all of my 330's, as I prefer the sound that this option gives me. The two benefits to three pickups is the slightly 'harder' more middly sound has a tighter definition & the neck & middle combined gives you a sound that you can't get on a two pick up Ric. Having said that, I'm sure that the two pickups will suit you just fine & if you decide later, you can always retro fit a pickup later...it's very cheap to do.

Big hands? I don't think you'll have a problem with the 6 strings, but you might have a small problem with the standard 12's....a 660 has a wider neck.
'Rickenbacker'...what a name! After all these years, it still thrills me.

Don't worry Dimitri, you can wait until you get your 12-string for the 360.....

Dmitri -- The 330 is a great choice! I have big hands myself, and I've played 330s and own a 360-12 and your hands will fit fine. Even on my 360-12, my fat little fingers have no problems. Good luck, and remember, we need pictures when you get it!

Hi Dimitris, I traded in my 360 for a 330. I don't miss the neck binding and never used the stereo outputs of the 360. I preferred the look of the 330, but also found it played better. They were set up the same, strings, action, but I still like the 330 better. My only regret is not being able to keep both!
