My 1979 4001 has a carved smiling face in the cavity under the pickguard Image. I should post a pic of it...

My bass is just "The Ric". Or occasionally "MY Ric", just to make sure people know who owns it! Hehehe.

Check under your truss rod cover. If there is a pencil number under the finish, your bass was likely worked on by Dale Fortune.

My '73 4001 FG has the words "4001 Q" and the name "Raul" under the pickguard in the control cavity.

As a result of this thread I now dub thee "Raul the Red Rickenbacker"

'NAT' is not a person in this case, it is short for natural maple or Mapleglo. It was better than average wood so it was picked to be Mapleglo. All of my MG Ricks have 'NAT' written in them somewhere....or Nat was one busy guy at the factory, LOL...

You'll find that Francisco Guerrero, Mike Gabriel, and John Gardino are also common initials you'll see. Lately Barbara Bailey Remington has also been busy.
