Bob Dylan songs by other artists question

Post by rob_mac »

Thought I should pose a question!

There has been a lot in the media about Bob just recently and it got me thinking about the hits on the U.K charts that other singers / groups had that were written by him.

My question is how many U.K top fifty hits were there written by Bob and sung by other artists in the Sixties??

Probably too easy for you lot!!

All Along the Watchtower, Alone Again (Naturally) are the only two I can think of off the top of my head...

Byrds, easily enough, guess some had success in the UK. Mr. Tambourine Man, My Back Pages. I suppose Roy would know better however.

No doubt good examples Mike, but only 1/4 qualifies in terms of Rob's Question.

My Back Pages Stan, not a hit in UK surprisingly

I did not recall all these I admit, most, but Ian Campell Folk Group passed me by.

The criteria was hits in UK in sixties.

I SHALL BE RELEASED -TREMELOES
JUST LIKE A WOMAN - MANFRED MANN
IF YOU GOTTA GO GO NOW -MANFRED MANN
IT AIN'T ME BABE - JOHNNY CASH
IT'S ALL OVER NOW BABY BLUE - JOAN BAEZ
THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING - PETER PAUL & MARY- IAN CAMPBELL FOLK GROUP
THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE -JULIE DRISCOLL & BRIAN AUGER TRINITY
YOU AIN'T GOING NOWHERE - BYRDS
THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE - JOAN BAEZ
FAREWELL ANGELINA - JOAN BAEZ

I assume Mr. Tambourine Man made it, Roy? However it's not on your list. Also how did Ricky Nelson's version of 'She Belongs to Me' fare in the UK?

Jimi Hendrix Experience- All Along The Watchtower

Should qualify?
Searchers amongst my teenage favourite music. Still fond of them, but earnestly a little puzzled they are considered THIS big! But I'm very excited about this forum, and will love to read it regularly, and also contribute!

Yes it did Stan, number one in fact, but I did not include that or Watchtower as they had been mentioned, not a definitive list by any means just tracks that came to mind and then just checked to make sure they were hits.

I believe you are correct Robert. A great song regardless.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm
