Beyond The Voice
Not as long as you Act Naturally Sheena.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Alltime sellout whose voice makes me turn the radio off every time: Michael McDonald, or, frankly, anything at all by the Doobie Brothers. Useless hack. Lately taking to hawking junk on late night TV (or did I have a nightmare that night?)

Randy,
I am not so sure about Keith since he is not the main singer. So I left him alone for now. But Mick does qualify for this list IMO.
I must point out the obvious, in that the Stones make up for their vocal deficiencies in so many ways. So adding Mick to the list should not be viewed as a derogatory comment.

How about Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie.
All prolific writers and a little short in the singing department

JJ...McDonald wasn't a sixties artist, and I can't really say his songwriting 'outshines' his vocal abilities. I appreciate your including him in the discussion however, as he deserves singling out.
I personally think his voice would have sounded better on all his recordings if he could have been dissuaded from his habitual vanilla milkshake gargling right before takes...

I didn't get where I am today by being on time...

Dane--no specification was made on "'60s" artists in Peter's original post. Or is this entire section devoted to '60s artists?
Or are we talking about artists in their '60s or ???

I don't get the 'Doobie-bashing'. Like 'em or not, all those guys (McDonald, Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons)are fine vocalists. If you don't 'like' them, that's okay. But they DO have credible vocal instruments. Same w/ Joan Baez. I personally think her vibrato sounds like she's on an exercise machine, but she CAN sing.Don't confuse personal taste w/ proficiency.
