Ken, what I meant about the headstock on the 4003 is that it isn't QUITE what a 60s one is, or at least the ones I've seen aren't. My V63 headstock (a 98) wasn't right, it was too chunky, which is also the case with the recent 4003 'stocks I've seen. My CS headstock (91) is just about perfect....and you could easily tell the difference between the two when I had them both. The CS was more elegant, although of similar dimensions.

Pfft. I'd would have played the 21 fretter.. I NEED a 21st fret on my 4001. (I tend to go that high sometimes. Like I play the keyboard solo from "The Trees" on my bass high up.. the lack of a 21st fret ruins it.) When I had my 5 string Dean.. it had 24 frets. I took advantage of that all the time.

I think a Jazz bass is a beautiful instrument. Much better than it's ugly one pick up counterpart. A Geddy Lee style J bass is eye candy to me.
A 4003.. less comfy then a jazz, but the shape and sound.. you can't compare. I would take a 4003 over a Jazz.

Hahaha. I just have a thing against P basses.. I don't know why.. it could be that "I hate it so much because I can't have one" or I'm just anti one pickup. One pickup doesn't have enough tone options fer me. I would take a J bass over a P bass any day though. That's why I'm going to build a J bass instead of a P bass.
And yes, I think the P pickup is butt ugly.
4001/4003 > J bass > P bass. But that's just me.
I have yet to try a 4004.
Thank you, John.

It's not funny at all, Shaun, like you, I think that in additional to sounding much better, a P bass also looks much nicer than a Jazz. A classic design. I played P basses for more than 20 years, since I could afford to buy a real one (1976 was my first). I don't like the offset body styling of the J. Appearance is important. That's why I pay attention to small details like the hump that grew beneath the switch in the 4003 pickguard. Once I noticed it, I can't not see it.
