The 381 does seem to have the 'love, hate' ingrediant. I know where everyone is coming from here. I once said that the 381 would never make it's way to my door, as I found the German carve....wait for it....UGLY! There, I said it!
However, I have been using a 12 string version for a while now (not mine) & I must admit, that it is beginning to grow on me in a BIG way, so much so, that I am now actively considering changing my mind on owning one. They are very comfortable to play, the 12 string sounds great & I am more & more coming to think of them as a very beautiful gtr.
The one I'm using is MG & I've only ever seen MG (The UK isn't known for its abundance of 381's!). If it were in FG, I'd probably be in financial trouble right now...

'Rickenbacker'...what a name! After all these years, it still thrills me.

Tony: You are getting old, creaky, and conservative, no doubt.
Melissa, it's the only SAAB convertible in these parts with a Rickenbacker TRC screwed to the body just below the right-hand taillight.
Some kids pulled up alongside in traffic and asked me what a "Rickenbacker" was. I told them that it's the best darned guitar made today.
They lowered their eyes in respect...squidly Stratobrats...grumble...

“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

These kids were not living in the State of California, they were in the State of Permanent Perplexity.
BTW, do your boys wear baseball caps with the visor over one ear?

It's the style here...young men have moved beyond the backwards baseball cap into all sorts of outré non-Euclidian dihedral angles.
I think it started in San Diego with Jason Mraz and his Take It Easy Boys...

The current fad here in SF (MUCH WEIRDER town than LA, where I lived for 24 years) is to pierce your earlobes and insert big rings into them, so it looks like you've got a porthole in your earlobe. The real hardcore piercers go up in size gradually until they can use their lobes to open beer bottles...
Hey, Aitch! Whatta great idea!
