Hi David,
I feel I may have been a little unkind in saying that your bass was ‘wrecked’; I regret my choice of word there. What I was trying to convey is that we mod our basses at great risk. First off a modded Ric will sound different but probably not any better. To paraphrase Ken, who are we to assume that we know more than very experienced designers and guitar makers?
There are a lot of fine instruments out there by Rickenbacker, Fender, Musicman etc etc. They all have their own character sound and playing style. I don’t really understand why some people radically modify a perfectly good instrument.
It took me over 30 years to come full circle and end up with Rickenbackers again, during that journey I owned most of the usual suspect instruments, yet never once felt that I could improve on the design of the maker.
Best wishes, Bob
