When someone buys an instrument it is theirs to do whatever they like with it. Some people will keep them in "the closet" as new for collection purposes, others will play them and still others will modify and play them. My opinion is there is room for all options and all are valid. When I buy one I do what I want with it, if a prospective future purchaser does not like what I have done they should not buy it, or be prepared to make whatever changes they want, if any.

Boy, did this thread stir everyone up! It should now be entitled " To each his own". That's my philosophy, as well. It's what makes different people (and basses) interesting! Lively discussion is what I like about this forum. Besides, it's your money, so do what you want, just don't cut half of the body off of an unsuspecting Rick!Image

I'm not a big fan of active electronics, either, but you can't say they sound sterile as a blanket statement after hearing Entwistle play his Alembic. Most of them aren't my bag, but that one ROCKS.

When you have a tri amped bass rig that stands 12 feet tall and 30 feet wide you could plug a fender squire in there and it would rock ...

Trust me, my Alembic can get that Entwistle sound through pretty much anything, that's just what Alembics sound like....when I first got it I played it through a friend's rig (4x10 Peavey and Hartke 3500) and there it was.....

I think ultimately mods are up to the individual. Some may think it's a good idea, some bad, but using David's idea of the reverseable pot mod won't damage the bass. Ultimately it's his bass, his decision. We could easily say the same about Geddy putting a Badass on his Ricks, which to me is just as drastic. And some would doubtless say the same about refinishes....(not me I hasten to add).

Got to say most of the active basses I've had I've got no time for anymore, and most of the ones out there I don't like too much either. The exceptions are the 2 Alembics I've owned which have been superb, my second Jaydee, my Wal (although I had some other issues with that) and my Pedulla, which I wish I still had; beautiful bass. I WILL get another....

BTW Jeff, like the Frankenstein, that's cool! As for that 6 string, I find myself strangely intrigued.....is that wrong Image ?

Actually, if our kitchen toaster was that big, I could fit a whole loaf in it!

The two Alembics I had sounded quite good. In their case the bass was designed as a complete concept, whereas most basses with active electronics use off the shelf components and mix-n-match, so to speak. When I got my first Zon the electronics in it were Bartolini multicoil pickups and TBT preamp. At first I liked the sound of it but after a while I tried bypassing the preamp and it sounded much better passive. Since that time I bought two more Zons and I asked Joe to make them passive!

actually to go to the other side of the argument ... take a 4000 bass and put in one active pickup and a 3 band tone circuit ... that could be cool ... it would not sound like a Ric but it would be cool ... or put a t-bird pickup in a 4000 bass with 500k ohm pots and a passive circuit ...
