as a general rule, i don't like the standard Ric guitars besides the 480 series, but this is hot hot hot.

Did you read the copy on the listing?

Agreed , it's rare, but "Once in a lifetime"?

Balderdash!!! Poppycock!!! There have been four on the 'Bay in the last two months alone.

And the BIN price. Exasperating. at $2K less, he would not have any takers. Man, these characters fry me.

Phlemmy, you are one of a kind; an original, the only guy I know who doesn't like Ricks except for 480s.

Could it have anything to do with their similarities to Rickenbasses? LOL!

I will take that as a super huge compliment even if it's not one. ;)

And yes, the physical correlation between the 480s and 4001/4003s is certainly why I like them.

Phlemmy, it was meant as a statement of your originality as a human being! Someday I hope to meet you and shake your hand.

I missed one on eBay by about $25 a few months ago. I think it ended up going for $2125.

Jwilli, so you're saying I should hang on to my "investment" 360-12 CW for a couple more years? <g>

That pic reminds me of seeing John Kay & Steppenwolf in 1990. After the show, the band came out and signed autographs. I cut out and brought with me the ad for the Rick John Kay model. When I handed it to JK to sign, he started telling me about his guitar. You could tell that he was extremely pleased with it.
I think its one of the coolest Ricks ever made. I think it would be cool if a 381 could be ordered with all of the John Kay Model's electronics on it, much in the way the 660 is basically a Tom Petty model without the signature on the pickguard.
