Truss rod adjustment

Post by rickwatt »

My 1973 4001 neck needs to be straightend a bit. I read the procedure on the Ric page and my question is, as I position the neck where I want it, how tight do I crank the nuts? I am aware that too much pressure may pop the fretboard-

You just want to snug up the/your nuts, they are there just to hold the rods in position not to apply force on the neck.

Maybe it's still the Blood loss Brian ... personally, nothing better than snuggling up your nuts ...

Phillip...this is a sacred thing, an art...

And I have NEVER tried it. Ones who have done the neck of a 84 (?) and earlier, please speak up. Image

From what I've read...you have to physically move the neck to where you want it...then "snug up your nuts". Looking in the TRC cavity (hehe, I said "cavity" Image ) that statement should make sense.

It's that physically move the neck part that sends a shiver down my backbone...so I'll just put lighter strings on my 75 4001, and try these Fender bridge cables I like on the Laredo...I have a fresh set of those, and I'll just keep the ones that don't have a lot of mileage off the 4001 as spares when I might break one of those 9050 ML's. I have the bass standing on the floor in front of me, hold the top of the headstock with one hand, push the heel forward gentlywith my knee, not applying too much force, always looking down the neck to see the curvature, and with the other hand I tighten the nuts.

Thanks Ilan...now one more question...

Do the strings have tension on them when you do this? I've heard contradictory things regarding this.

I always have my strings in tension. I often slacken just one string and move it off the nut to get good access to the end of the rod.

Ed, first time I did this I was shaking. Now I do it without any worry at all. Good luck!

It doesn't matter really, as you bend the neck backwards. I don't slacken the strings, I just move the D string to the G string slot in the nut and the A to the E, so that I have good access to the nuts. And just like Bob, I too was nervous the first time I did this.
