"Russian rock" (for Peter&anyone who's i
Here's some examples of what rock in Russia is about (at Peter's request)
1. Akvarium (Aquarium), "Kogda projdet bol' (when there's no pain)", http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2S6FQXN3HY82P0QQGEG0MLREBQ - one of the most legendary Russian rock bands, formed early 70s, still active albeit the leader, Boris (Bob) Grebenshchikov (more known as BG), has a career of his own. Recorded 1994.
2. Mashina Vremeni (Time machine), "Ona idet po zhizni smeyas' (she always laughs)" - http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=349OA2GL3RWKX0VQ2EOB1USXLJ - claimed to be the first Russian rock band, formed 1969, still active. Recorded 1984.
3. Kino (Movies), "Bezdelnik (lazybones)" - http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0FGE55G4438S10AYTO9TM3KASC - a legendary Russian amateurish band, later on to become professional, formed early 80s, disbanded 1990 due to untimely death of the leader. First record (1982), poor quality.
4. Sekret (Secret), "Bespechny ezdok (easy rider)" - http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1NJVFCJA502140EWJ3D6BA5449 - a Russian beat group, formed 1983, disbanded late 90s, called by some people "Beatles mockingbirds". The song is more typical for Russian rock in general than for this particular band.
5. David Tukhmanov (composer), "Iz Vagantov" (a student's song) - http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=06G91DHKQZEFK3J0MONKAZ678J - not considered to be "russian rock" actually, still a nice piece of music, recorded 1974.

Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
Sheena: This is great and I will move the topic to Others at some point.
I need more time to listen but I especially like Sekret. It reminds me of the Atlanta Rhythm Section in places.
Thanks so much for this effort.

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Sean: yep, Aria is cute, albeit i'm not so much into that kind of stuff, and they're also great "thieves", "Bespechny angel"'s tune ('Careless angel' for you) was stolen from Golden Earring's "Road angel" if i'm not mistaken with the title, and there were some others i can't remember off the top of my head.
Peter: i had no doubt you'd like Sekret, they are cute and very optimistic. May post more of their songs if you want.

I saw a doc on the missile forces in Russia & some of the chaps on a base had a band. They played part of a tune in the show & it sounded really cool. Can't remember if they gave their name or not. It was just low volume practice gear, but sounded quite good. Used harmonic minor scale a lot. Their own material, I'm sure.
Plus five minus five!

Oh, by the way... were Gorky Park really so popular in USA as they claim? Just wondering...
Dane: if you mean Leningrad Cowboys, they are from Finland actually, despite their name... mmm... no i guess it isn't Red Elvises, and it isn't Bravo (their hairstyle was quite normal).

Yep, Elvises are a lot of fun, albeit i know some people who think the cover photo for their "Welcome to the Freakshow" album was 'not for kids'... eh...
Thanks for information about Gorky Park's US career Sean. It's really nice they had some success 'abroad', bet not so many of our artists did.
