Well, you see Brian, it IS music from the 80s, with a single exception. The truth is, before 80s, these people weren't allowed to make a record to be released officially, earlier "Russian Rock" material is available as bootlegs only (if it IS available - in some cases, you'd spend quite a lot of time trying to find them, even if you know 'right places'). As far as Sekret is concerned, the guys formed the band in early 80s as i have already mentioned, they're still quite young.
But i'm glad it all really started in 80s cause i had a chance to face it ALL!

Sheena,
I once did a tour date in Vancouver with a German techno pop group called Kraftwerk. Their big hit over here was an instrumental (for the most part) called Autobahn. You probably have already heard of Kraftwerk.
Also my brother went to school with Drew Arnott in the 70's. Drew and another local musician named Darryl Kromm formed a band in 1983. They called their band Strange Advance. They had a big hit with a song named Worlds Away.
Much of the music you have posted sort of fits in with what these two bands were playing then.
If you get a chance take a listen to some of their stuff, I think that you will agree that there are many similarities on the creative side of the music. There is a big difference in vocal styles employed, however.

Brian,
thanks for your comments. I agree, our bands were influenced by Kraftwerk and many others in lots of ways (albeit i know some people here who truly believe russian rock is a unique thing that was "born" out of our own music tradition and nothing else - weird enough), never heard of Strange Advance though, must check them out.
I'd also like to hear what you'd say about this one - http://s55.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0A8FDFYHKSG793KQ5BA0ZNDMYQ

Sheena,
That has a European in fact almost a Bavarian feel to it IMO. It reminds me of some of the Octoberfest celebrations that we have attended. It is a tune that is a lot of fun and it demonstrates that the musicians are very good at their craft.

I don't know why Dane but I am somewhat surprised that you would play music by Kraftwerk.
In fact I don't know too many people who even know who they are. They were huge in Europe but really fizzled over here. I am not a big fan of techno pop but their material in some instances was composed around basic classical elements. It was really quite pleasant to listen to.

But Dane they played bass on a keyboard. Isn't that just short of sacrilege for a bass player?

Brian: thanks for your comment, unexpected indeed, 5 out of 5!
Dane: keyboard on a bass? that's thrilling, i cannot even imagine that! (BTW, did you recall that mystic band's name, the one which had odious haircuts? it's still breaking my head, puzzled to the bone.)

Sheena,
My musical taste knows few boundaries. The only genre that I really do not like is rap. I appreciate everything from classical to jazz and I also really enjoy well played indigenous works also.
Even though I play blues and jazz fusion predominately I also really enjoy playing music with a latin feel and early 60's 70's rock.
Good music will always stand the test of time.

Absolutely agree with everything, Brian (c-rap included). I think i'll find something else to post, to hear your opinion. Different point of view (especially from a person who knows that much) is what i enjoy at any time, and it's great.

Here's another two, from a "modern" band (90s-00s) - i'm interested in your comments Brian...

Sheena,
Wow. I wish I could understand Russian. The music by that band is a complex mix of traditional music, jazz and rock. The guitar player has a very unique style. Although the music is really nothing like Leonard Cohen's it reminds me of the feel that he generates.
I think it would grow on me, particularly if I could understand the lyrics. I suspect that they are very interesting and quite deep.
