Strings go against the mounting ring when i play!

Post by anoukane »

The action isn't very low on my Ric 4001 ' 77, but when i play the string, most of the time it touches the mounting ring(treble pickup). The neck is pretty strait. I don't want to adjust the bridge to higher the action, otherwise the action will be to high. Is there any way to solve this problem? Anyone heard of this problem before?
Thanks in advance.

hmm...is there much list on your tailpiece? and are the strings hitting the pickup surround or the pickup cover?

Here's a surround from Mike Parks' website where you can see the cutouts. If the surround on your bass doesn't have them, maybe you should get one like that.

By the way, in the picture it looks like the cover is installed incorrectly above the surround, perhaps you should start by looking at this diagram from the RIC website.

There are no cutouts in your surround.

Philip-

I have 4 4001s from '76 to '80. They all have the same surround as yours without the cutout and are all mounted the same way. None of mine have a problem with the strings hitting the surround.

I have a surround with the cutout that I might trade for one without the cutout if you're interested. I live in Chicago though so the shipping might be too much. Send me an email if you're interested.

Ok thanks for the information. Isn't there any place i can just buy a surround with the cutout? I'd like to keep the original in case the surround with the cutout doesn't fit or something..
