That's true. "Test For Echo" is one of those albums that really sounds a hundred times better live than in the studio. Usually Rush are quite good about equalizing the two, so that live they are equally amazing as they are in the studio.

Rush is good at that.. keeping the live and studio versions pretty much the same.. But I can say that anything on ESL is superior to the studio version. I swear everyone over does it in every song.

TSoR - overdone bass during guitar solo.

Red Barchetta - overdone bass

YYZ - overdone bass and god like drum solo

APTB - Doubleneck Geddy.. so 12 string during the guitar solo and overplaying near the end

CTTH - Bass during the guitar solo is completely different than the studio.. the crowd singing along gives me goosebumps. Mini bass solo at the end.

B,B&B - Missing one verse... but overdone bass.. again.

The Trees - Broon's Bane intro and overdone keyboard solo. That solo is beautiful. My favorite Rush keyboard piece.

Xanadu - Doublenecks.. Geddy overdoes the bass at the beginning.. 12 string behind guitar solo at the end.

Free Will - Insane bass during the guitar solo.. completely different than the album version. Ged sings it HIGHER!! It that possible??

Tom Sawyer - Has an ending!

La Villa Strangiato - Perfect. extended keyboard at the beginning.. Ged overdoes it, but it fits. Bass solo is perfect. Al wails during his solo.. that has life! "A Lerxst in Wonderland" Amen to that!

It's weird, but everyone talks about the great sound on "Exit...Stage Left" . . . I think the mix is horrible. It's so soft and, well, mellow. I don't listen to it often because the sound is so . . . wimpy. Though I must agree, the actual songs they play are brilliant. The only things I would improve upon would be to change the mix to make the instruments and vocals more defined, and then also I would have them play "Xanadu" at normal speed . . . on "Exit...Stage Left", they play it REALLY SLOW. But other than that, that album is great.

Do you have the remastered version? Or the old one?

Yes Xanadu is REALLY slow... but it's tuned right. Xanadu on AFTK to a little higher up for some reason.

Geddy's tone on ESL has got to be the BEST bass sound ever! IMHO of course. It has balls, low end, distortion and growl.. it's sick. That's what I (and many many others) with their bass would sound like. I want my 4001 to sound like Ged's Rick. The custom bass (That's still being built) and the 4004 I'm gonna get will be MY sound.

What're your thoughts on "A Show of Hands"? I never got the real one.. I have a bootleg.. Birmingham (sp?) '88. Songs from the album and video.. but I'm missing "Witch Hunt" and "Mystic Rhythms". I never understood why they didn't put "Prime Mover" on the album.. it says "force a show of hands" in it! And Marathon is REALLY SLOW!! That song is great live.. but it's too slow for me. "Turn the Page" live? How the hell does he play and sing something that opposite? The video is good.. it's sad that he even bothers singing 2112... he sang it friggin awful. Like half an octave lower. It's laughable.

I have the remastered version. I love Geddy's bass tone on "Exit...Stage Left", but the overall sound of the album is still, in my opinion, quite wimpy. It's just like, quiet and slightly foggy. Except the drums. The drums are mastered very well.

My favorite Geddy bass tones of all time are EVERYTHING from "A Farewell to Kings" (which is what I try to emulate most often) and his tone from the song "Subdivisions", which is an absolutely brilliant sound.

"A Show of Hands" is the one Rush album that I do not yet own. I've heard very mixed opinions on it, from "It rocks!" to "It sucks!" When I buy it, I'll get back to you. I must say, "Turn the Page" is one of my favorite basslines ever. Geddy talked about playing that in an interview, saying that he found it very difficult to play a bassline along with keyboards and offbeat vocals. I imagine it would be . . .

"Subdivisions" is a great tone. I wonder what you'll think of the Wal on that track from ASOH. I love that album... Ged's voice is beautiful. The jam at the end of CTTH is great (not as good as the DS version) and the way he yells "HEART!" is kick ***!

Here's the track list.

1. Intro (Three Stooges) (0:53)
2. The Big Money (5:52)
3. Subdivisions (5:19)
4. Marathon (6:32)
5. Turn the Page (4:40)
6. Manhattan Project (5:00)
7. Mission (5:44)
8. Distant Early Warning (5:18)
9. Mystic Rhythms (5:32)
10. Witch Hunt (Part III of Fear) (3:55)
11. The Rhythm Method (drum solo) (4:34)
12. Force Ten (4:50)
13. Time Stand Still (5:10)
14. Red Sector A (5:12)
15. Closer To The Heart (4:53)

My track list on my mp3s:

1. Intro (Three Stooges)
2. The Big Money
3. Subdivisions
4. Marathon
5. Turn the Page
6. Prime Mover
7. Manhattan Project
8. Closer to the Heart
9. Red Sector A
10. Force Ten (How convenient!)
11. Time Stand Still
12. Distant Early Warning
13. Lock and Key
14. Mission
15. Territories
16. YYZ (with drum solo)
17. The Spirit of Radio
18. Tom Sawyer
19. Medley - 2112 - La Villa Strangiato - In the Mood (Finale)

It Bothers me that I'm missing Mystic Rhythms and Witch Hunt, but I live with it. The Finale is a nice little jazzy bass solo.

Birmingham '88 bootleg. It's not the same as the normal HYF tour setlist, but it has all the songs on the video and the album.. minus the two I mentioned before.

That list is:

Intro ("Three Stooges Theme")
The Big Money
Subdivisions
Limelight
Marathon
Turn The Page
Prime Mover
Manhattan Project
Closer To The Heart
Red Sector A
Force Ten
Time Stand Still
Distant Early Warning
Lock And Key
Mission
Territories
YYZ
The Rhythm Method (Drum Solo)
Red Lenses
The Spirit Of Radio
Tom Sawyer
Encore: 2112
La Villa Strangiato
In The Mood

So I'm missing a couple songs.

If you go into the Rush section and then the traders section you'll most likely find someone who has that show. One of the best sounding Rush boots out there I take it. If you're not a bootleg fan then ignore that. Image Buy the DVD next year and rip the songs yourself.. and mix it with the album tracks.
