One of a kind ain't she... bookmatched body halves of flamin' maple. If you look hard you can see the flame all thru the top half.
Ans while we're on FL's & 21 fretters, here's mah 72 21 FL
My only gripe with the 4002 aesthetically is the pickguard......to me, it lacks the elegance of the 4003 style. Still stunning overall but I think the pickguard detracts a little.
No offense to forum owners. Uniqueness and select wood grain aside, they don't do a thing for me. It was well ahead of its time I'd say. I just can't get that stupid pallet at RIC out of my head however!
well see if i have better pics...ido ...my scanners down as well as my digital camera.......i play her a lot...the wear marks on the pickguard are where my fingers sit...gone through two layers...at the bass of the fretboard ive worn the finish right off her....i only play with my fingers..so its constant playing thats done it...i do have much better pics tho...ill post em when i can...these are just from my webcam
It has been a well played bass and has not sat under a bed much for the last twenty five years. It has been Blair's main bass since he first got it. We are not talking about a closet classic here. My old 72 Pbass looks like it went through the Boer War too.
The bass looks gorgeous in person despite the wear.Blair...I remember when she was almost brand new.
Blair , Wes is referring to something that got leaked out a couple of weeks ago.A pallet full of 4002's was recently discovered in the bowels of the Rickenbacker warehouse.
Let's just say that many knickers were knotted when the news got out. At this point they will not be released. There are also a bunch of frying pans still in the factory !!!
Something about the 4002 pick guard makes it look fat or pregnant to me...
Hey, Blair.. don't listen to these guys. I think it's cool that that bass is all beat up. It not like the ones these guys own.. mint condition because no one plays em. (no offence guys)
I wish I had a bass so 'me' that I'd never need another one. That makes Blair's even cooler.. not needing anything else.
1976 Rickenbacker 4001
2011/05 Fender Standard Fretless Jazz Bass
2005/11 Fender Standard Jazz Bass
Blair also has a fretless Fender Coranado ....heh.
Blair, bring that 4002 down to Bearly's blues jam this Sunday night. Maybe John Drysdale will see this thread and drop down too. John just bought an early 70's mapleglow from Funky Freddie that has the desirable features.Checkerboard and a toaster. Maybe I can get Kirk to drag out his old 4000 too.
Hey, my 4002 is played ALL of the time too... Unfortunately, we only gig about once a month and I always wipe it down and take extra good care of it so yes, it still does look good. I also think the little bit of finish checking that's there gives it some character!
I got it to play it, not to let it sit in a closet - if I own a bass I play it (although some more than others)! But, that doesn't mean that I can't take care of it too. *smirk*
