Yoko Ono Apologizes for McCartney Remark

Post by winston »

Lifted from a news release this morning.

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoko Ono has apologized to Paul McCartney for insinuating that his songs are trite.

Accepting an award on behalf of John Lennon last month, Ono said Lennon had sometimes felt insecure about his songs, asking "why they always cover Paul's songs and never mine."

"I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with spoon that you write.'"

After reports of the apparent slight circulated, Ono apologized in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine, now on newsstands.

"I certainly did not mean to hurt Paul, and if I did, I am very sorry," she says.

McCartney has sometimes clashed with Ono, Lennon's widow.

She objected when McCartney reversed the traditional "Lennon-McCartney" songwriting credit on his 2002 album, "Back in the U.S." Ono's spokesman accused him of attempting to "rewrite history."

McCartney had earlier complained that Ono wouldn't let him take credit for "Yesterday," a song written entirely by McCartney.

Yester..............................................DAY
All my troubles seemed so far...............AWAY
Now it looks as though they're here to...STAY
Oh, I believe in Yester.........................DAY

The moon in June shines mainly like a spoon...
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...

Dane, I am reminded of Steve Allen reciting the lyrics to Be-Bop-A-Lula. Anything can be deconstructed into a form that appears trite.

But, combined with the melody, Yesterday is still a really cool song, although I personally prefer the more up-tempo stuff. It's more fun to play and, truthfully, I really love the optimism of much of the early Beatles music. Yesterday is, to quote one of his contemporaries, a bit dreary. But I'd have known better than to pass it up. ;)

Its also the most covered song in history.

Yea, Paul was a bit "moon in june" (and recognizing this he parodied himself in Silly Love SOng) ... but his amazing talent cant be denied.

He just needs more "no" men around to tell him to F**k off when he wants to do **** songs. Image That, and he needs to listen to them and not do them!

Precisely, Greg...

For the record, I like "Yesterday" just fine...it's a great tune. Then again, I like "Anna" by Trio...

Don't they have some connection to Yoko? Uh, oh...

What matters is the context that the other words give the rhyme, not the actual rhyme itself.

All songs look stupid if you emphasize only the rhyme. Bob Dylan's It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) begins with the rhyme

Darkness at the break of NOON
Shadows even the silver SPOON....

And later,

Disillusioned words like bullets BARK
As human gods aim for their MARK
Made everything from toy guns that SPARK
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the DARK
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil FATES
Teachers teach that knowledge WAITS
Can lead to hundred-dollar PLATES
Goodness hides behind its GATES
But even the president of the United STATES
Sometimes must have to stand naked.

A lot happens in between the rhymes.

Ethan...now let me see if I've got this straight...you don't find "Bark, Mark, Spark, Dark" to be an infinitely superior Poem to "Day, Away, Stay, Day"? Oh, well...
