Well, it DOES look fake to me, but I gave the benefit of the doubt because I know Wim doesn't like that yellowed binding.
Besides, I've known/seen "jobs" almost exactly like that in the past too. They fall into the "what were you thinking?" category.
Now my only question is: Was that a Photoshop job or is that some White-Out smeared on the binding?

My first impression was "white out." But neither paint nor scraping looks quite like that...
