Problem with nut

The previous owner of my 72’ slightly over cut the ‘D’ groove on its’ nut, so there is a slight fret buzz on an open string. I don’t really want to replace or even remove the nut if I can help it. Is there a recommended way to pack the nut under the string? I thought about putting a very small blob of epoxy resin on it, waiting for it to completely harden and then refile the ‘D’ slot?

Any advise would be greatly apreaciated.

I've done that before. I usually pop the nut off and shim it up from underneath.

The best solution is just to cut a new nut.

The older nuts are different than the newer ones. You might try building up the individual slot.

I have found two different fixes for that . 1, if the nut is black plastic i use black plastic epoxy that i found at my hardware store . 2, I use gel super glo . Just lay it in the groove let it setup for a day cut the slot and your in business .Both of these methods have worked everytime for me . I dont like to replace the nut if i dont have to . Something about the original vibe you know . Good luck

I wouldn't replace the nut either. Way too much unneccessary work and you lose your original nut. The main guitar tech guy at the Chicago Music Exchange once told me he uses super glue.

As ever this forum comes up trumps, thanks guys.

I will find something to semi fill the slot, and then cut back to the correct depth. Thanks again, the 72' will probably end up being gigged a lot IF... I can source a 'scooped out' surround to the bridge P/U. The strings are so close to the existing one that they often hit it!

I tried Mike Parks but 1: He is not allowed to supply parts to the UK, and 2: That part only comes with the total P/U assembly.

A scooped-out surround will turn up eventually, Bob. Don't give up hope!

I actually have a couple lying around. I'm tempted to send one to you, but they are original equipment on my newer 4003S and my 4001C64S, and I like to be able to reverse my mods. I prefer the un-scooped as the scooped ones have a sharp edge that my fingers don't like.

By the way...I am simply amazed that a thread with THIS title has been allowed to exist for as long as it has without any sick, perverted jokes being made. My hat's off to you guys...you've really grown up a lot and have restored my faith in humanity.

I'm sure one will show up on ebay in the next month or two, Bob. I just sent a scooped one(the one extra one I had) out to a guy in California to trade for a non-scooped one. He's been taking his sweet time sending me the one I traded for, and I'm starting to wonder!

I use super glue mixed with baking soda to build up nut slots. Learned that trick from Dan Erlewine!
