Auditions

I try to meet folks first, to get some idea if they are an axe-murdered or something. But you can't tell anything about music that way, depending on how stringent you were screening the auditions. At the point of the pre-meeting you should at least have an idea of what type of music is potentially to be played.
Ageism definitely exists, Jeff, I've seen it too, and I'm 10 years your junior. There are lots of folks who want someone close to their age, and base their decisions on that rather than how well folks play and play together.

Above e-mail is inactive. try ed_ardzinski@**** where **** is Hotmail.com or Yahoo.com. I tend to see things inthe hotmail box quicker...

Playing with someone of a vastly different age group just feels awkward unless you share a lot of the same interests (musical or otherwise). I've played for 10 years with a guy 20 years older than I, but we both like a lot of the same things & get along well outside of playing.
Wow! Jeff, you sure don't look 50! I figured maybe mid 30's.

Im sorry guys. I just got a little angry.
Anything I say about people my age isnt really trying to dis them. Its just hard to find people really into it. Most if it is just a fad or something. So I have a hard time finding people to play with my age. I love playing with old guys. I dont think Id like to play with them all the time. But in general every time Iv played with older guys I enjoyed it alot. And I wouldnt pass a chance to play with them.
They are playing metal btw. I typically dont listn to much metal. But theres some metal I like and im gonna talk to them about it. But Id rather at least accept the audition so I can get a feel for their stuff and so I can just see how they play. Then it looks like well both make up our minds.
Sorry once again guys.

I get along good with old rockers in their 60s and young rockers in their 20s ... and everything in between ...
these days I kind of like being in the band that is auditioning the players ... we recently auditioned drummers ... we ran an ad and set up 10 auditions ... gave them each 5 or 6 songs to know and then let them pick a song or 2 from our set list to play ... which song they pick would also tell us a little about them as well ... then talking with them and asking what they want in a band helps to ...
and guys if our under 20 members want to beat their chest and declare how good they are then let them ... someday they will realize that no matter how good they play there is always someone who plays better and that being good at playing music is not a measure of a persons real character ...

Jeff,
The more you post on subjects like this, and playing styles, the more I respect you.
You've come out with some of the most basic, but essential advise for players at any age and level.
Now, if only I could get you to understand the value and beauty in the Pickup cover, and the Mute bar. !!

"Ronn... Dude whats your problem with us?"
Who's "us"? I was referring to YOU.
"Stoping being a Ahole just because we are 16 and can play everything you can."
I'm curious, how do you know what I can play? Do you have any of the CDs I've played on? How many live performances of mine have you been to? You should say hi during a break next time.
"Envy can be just as bad as a ego."
And what could I possibly be envious of...your playing ability? I've never heard you or been to one of your shows. Have you posted recordings here? Tell me where, I'll check it out.
"Besides you figure someone who is 43 would be mature enough not to fight with a couple of 16 year olds."
Who's fighting? My post was concerning your thread where you come off as highly egotistical, and if you check the thread after my post, you'll see I am not alone in my opinion. And at what age does someone stop being put off by someone who constantly toots his own horn? And who's the other 16 year old? Again, I'm only referring to YOU.
My final thoughts on a thread I've wasted far too much time on:
Good luck to you, play with all who'll let you, get some good gear and keep it in working order, don't cheap out on the little things(cords, pedals, etc), and when your humility matches your talent you'll be in good shape.
Here's my ego moment, "I'm the best Ronn Roberts-style bass player I know". And you can qoute me.

The mutes and pickup covers are pretty ... but they get in my way ... to quote the famous German architect ... "Form follows function" ... and Jim thanks for the compliment ... someday in the next few years I will get out to California and meet some of you wonderful Ric forum members and perhaps even see the Ric factory and meet the people who make these wonderful instruments ...

Hey guys lets all get along here ... we all like Rics right?
If somebody wants to declare how good he is on bass then no problem ... it is just an opinion ...
it is like the flats vs. rounds ... or finger vs. picks ... or slap or no slap ... or ampeg vs. GK vs ashdown vs. SWR ... it is all just opinions and we all get to voice one ...
I am happy for Jacob ... he gets to audition for a band ... this could be a step forward in his music career ...
and everybody should get their 15 minutes of fame and we should all be happy someone else gets theirs as well ...

I wrote a post, but my internet ******* out on me for some reason . . . oh well, here's an approximation of it:
"It's times like these I'm glad to be 45 years old. The most talented individuals, are also typically the most humble."
If only that were remotely true. The most talented people tend to know that they are just *that good*, and they tend to want people to know it. And while talent does not equal humility, neither does lack of it. There are also plenty of people who are arrogant without being anywhere near the most talented people ever.
A person's arrogance or humility is a horrible way of inferring a person's talent.
Also, I don't see what age has to do with it either. I know plenty of people over 50 with absolutely no sense of humility; I know plenty of people in their teens who would be absolutely horrified if someone thought they were being arrogant. In fact, the most shy, grounded, self-deprecating person I know just turned 18 two months ago . . . and no, he doesn't have self-esteem problems at all. Being older does not necessarily make one humbler.
That all being said . . . Jacob, go to the audition and play your best.
THE END.

Ronn im gonna say sorry for my last comment. I was just ****** off. And probly half of it isnt true. You know how it is when your ******. Or maybe even when your 16. But I think you misunderstood me on this forum from the begining. I dont say much about myself in person. I dont tell people they suck or im better then them. I dont brag about myself all the time. Most the time its my friends braging for me. I dont say much about my skill or talent level unless im asked. And even then I try to not brag. I probly did took my horn on this thread. But that was no reason to be as rude as you where. But dude... Just forget the whole thing. Im sorry for anything I may of said. And no hard feelings.
Thanks for the blessings guys.
