Just picked this up...

'81 4001S that I've had on hold until today, being today was the day it could be released from the store. I got it at a really good price. It's paint is a bit worn, it's got a nasty little gash on the lower curve of the body. This bass plays and sounds awesome. The neck is very thin on this bass, yet straight as can be.
I'm wondering if I should refin it or leave it as a beater. I would try do do it myself, I've done a bit of guitar repair and modifications, but I know nothing about refinishing a guitar. Time to learn. get a pro to do it, or leave it as it is?

I didn't want to buy anymore used Ricks and it's not a 5 string, but this one has such a cool vibe and plays and sounds so good, I couldn't pass on it. If it were a 4003S, it would get the 4-2-5 mod.

SWEET one, Joey!! Congratulations!! Leave it as is, you won't have to worry about it at all, you can really get down with it!

Nice bass, Joey! I'd leave it as is and play it a bunch. You can always do a refinish later.

Actually, when I first saw this bass out of the corner of my eye, my immediate thought was BLACKSTAR!! Then the chrome trim said...not quite.

Nice buy Joey, I would leave it as is but I can relate to that feeling you have "The let's finish it project" thing...Image
I wonder what would be the difference in sound being a set neck?

joey, if anything just throw the black trc on it...or sell it to me. selling it to me to match my 79 would be the nicer of the 2 things to do.
