4001CS + GHS rehearsal review.

I bought Brian's 4001CS (mostly because I knew I'd never see another one for that price again and kick myself for years...) I strung it up with Rotosounds and did a few rehearsals with it. I really liked it, but it didn't have the *magic* of my 68. (I know, I'm spoiled.)

On a lark, I saw some GHS boomers on sale for cheap and picked them up and strung 'er up.

HOLY CRIMINY!!! I know GHS are cheap and not-well-looked upon, but for whatever reason, they brought the beast out of this bass.

The biggest surprise was the versatility. I play in a classic rock band. We'll go from ZZTop to U2 to Smithereens to The Fixx to Peter Gabriel and I was able to dial in tones to approximate the various basses needed for them. Stingray, P and of course the famous RICK SNARL. Fingerstyle, URB, slap, pick. All those tones out of one bass. I am humbled and the drummer is all smiles. I'm gonna gig the hell out of this bass.

I'm going to have to get a Pickguardian guard and mothball the CS guard because the paint comes off of it too easy.

I'm a fan of GHS Boomers too. I don't get more than a gig or two out of a set but I break strings pretty regularly so I change them before most shows anyway and more expensive strings would be a waste. Since the Boomers are pretty cheap and sound great when fresh they are perfect for my needs.

I'm glad the CS is a good match for you and that you are happy with the transaction.

One of the few sets of strings I can get for my 12-string bass are GHS, I like them a lot on that bass.
Brian, getting blood on your strings doesn't exactly extend their lifespan!

This could have been the CS.......or the LK........and yes, the strings were toast .....

....since someone else brought it up I have an excuse to post the pic again!

Brian, I always think that bass looks like you used it beat someone with. That bass could ne in a horror flick...The Texas Bass Beater Massacre. LOL

I use Boomers too, on all basses I have roundwounds on. I've found them to be dependable now for years, I switched from Rotos to these.

That's what I call bleeding music! Ha Ha. Seriously, RIC should look into smoothing out the sharp points on the surround to keep that from happening. One more reason to keep that cover on I guess.

Yep.....nothing to do with the sharp edges. I got blisters after playing my 4003s8 for two sets the night before. The blisters ruptured the second song into our set the first time we played the House of Blues. We finished the show and sounded pretty good......I couldn't play for a few weeks after......

I use _only_ GHS Boomers for rounds. It doesn't matter what kinda bass I put 'em on, they always sound great.

And they don't break the bank either.
