Fosters is almost 100% export these days - nobody here drinks it anymore. It's mostly VB, Melbourne and Draught.

Always a fan of Swan and Emu......

BTW, Gerry - CUB is doing a limited production run (about 80,000 dozen I think) of Crown Lager in aluminium bottles! Production starts first week of December.

They will also be releasing a 700ml Crown Lager before Christmas.

If you can find some CUB Pure Blonde, give it a try - not too shabby at all!

Aitch, I don't know about there, but in the USA it's advertisement slogan is: "Fosters. it's Australian for beer."

They don't advertise it here any more. We now get:

"A hard-earned thirst deserves a big cold beer.. and the best cold beer is Vic... Victoria Bitter.

You can get it any old how... dishin' up chow.... or milkin' a cow!

So, Howard, forgive my ignorance, but do Austrailians prefer a lager type beer or more of an ale? I would associate the word "Bitter" with an English style ale, but not usually with the word "cold".

My daughter has decided that she wants to go to school down there so I gotta get my priorities lined up.

To be honest, Lindsay, 'bitter' beer down here bears no relationship to the English style. There's little difference between lager and bitter and they are more like a traditional lager than anything else. We like them both, as long as they're cold but not too cold - it loses its flavour then.

Is your daughter serious about wanting to go to school here? I'd be interested in her reasoning for that and what kind of school she'd want to go to - government or private. Government will only cost you around $1,000 to $1,200 a year for tuition, books and uniforms. Private can be anything from $8,000 to $20,000 a year!!

Thanks, Howard. Yes, she's serious, but she's also eleven, so I have plenty of time to either a) talk her out of it, or b) start looking for a second job. My oldest is sixteen, though, and she wants to go to Oxford, so perhaps I should amend b) to say "third" job.

Interesting that I see lots of Australian wine in shops here but only one or two brands of beer.

I guess the other breweries don't bother trying because of Fosters' dominance. Pity.... there are some fabulous beers over here - lots of boutique breweries doing their own thing.

Maybe your daughter will get over it, Lindsay. My son wanted to go to wrestling school in the US, but thankfully he outgrew the notion - he was going to have to find the $20,000 on his own anyway!!

I originally started this thread during a night on the sauce and here I am talking nonsense once again. What do I find now? Everyone is talking about beer! I used to be a beer monkey with my favourite tipple being Carling or Fosters with Hoegarden White beer and Magners Cider designated as "first beer of the night".

I am currently exploring French wines ( I previously found them bland originally). I enjoy a good South African wine (incidently most vintage Hungarian wines are actually South African due to the whole apartheid thing) Argentinian Mendozas and Austrealian Shiraz'z.

My alltime favourite wine is Chateau Neuf D'pape.

I also enjoy Vodka - the poor man's Nintendo - especially the few imports that you can actually drink straight. Most domestic Vodka is like brake fluid and

you can only drink it with a mixer. A good polish or russian vodka can be drunk straight like any good single malt whiskey of which I am also a huge fan of.
