Pyramid Flatwounds on your flat top acoustic?

Post by loverickbass »

Has anyone here ever put Pyramids on their acoustic? I'm pondering this idea for my 700C. Give me a review if you can.

Never tried that.... I use Elixir Nanowebs on mine, and absolutely love the bright tone....

Yup, that's what I use too. There is a place here locally that sells a custom RIC set. Great strings. Here is a link:

Oh, 700C/12 with E3! Wherefore art thou? When will I gaze upon your beautiful Fireglo shading? I long to join this discussion. Two-and-a-half years and counting. I'm not complaining. I'm just whining. Sorry. I know the deal. Global economics and real estate speculation both really suck.

And by the way, Link Wray, RIP.

Hey. I have Pyramid Gold 11s (nickel flatwounds) on my J-160E. It's very nice and still has some of the edge and sparkle that you think you might be missing without bronze strings. I play the J-160E plugged, of course, so the nickel wound strings really do perform better with the P100 than would a bronze set. The Pyramid flats are higher tension strings than typical rounds or bronze rounds, so the 11s give you plently of pull on the top to produce a nice acoustic unplugged tone, as well. Good luck!

John,

I came by mine by accident really. I offered a guy on Ebay a trade and he took it! I traded him a 360/12V63 for it. Here is a pic:

Lawton,

Thanks for that review. I think I'm going to stay with my Elixers, I forgot about the tension problem with Pyramids. I already tune down a half step with my current strings and still have some belly rise. These RIC acoustic tops are super thin.

I have tried Pyramids on my Gibson J50 but they were nothing to write home about. They sounded fine when using a passive pickup at the soundhole but the active pickup under the bridge was not a nice as with round wounds.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I've been using Pyramid's acoustic strings on my J-45 RW and Seagull Folk. I bought them from the Toneman.

JC, if you really want to try flats but the Pyramid tension issues are a concern you might want to try some Thomastik-Infeld strings. They're not quite as heavy tension-wise, and I really prefer they way they feel. They're not going to drive the top of the guitar quite as much, but that's the trade-off you have to make to avoid the harder pull.

Good idea Lawton. I'm really particular about the tension issue.
