I do at time do use a mechanical mute on my rake. I find that it provides very little overtones as I gather the leaves. On the downside, the farther up the rake I hold it, the more pronounced the effect is. And it prevents me from palm muting. My rake does still sport it's pickup cover though. It just doesn't look right with it off.
