Speaking of The Searchers - Pass Their Music On!
Mark Lemon has recently submitted an article about The Searchers to Needles and Pins. It is entitled "Speaking Of The Searchers - Pass Their Music On". Please give it a read.

A nice article well written and some valid points made, "When you walk in The Room" was in my view a inspiration for The Byrs arrangement of "Tambourine man" although how much it is McQuinn's influence as opposed to Terry Melcher's,who produced the record is perhaps debatable. Anyone listening to the "Tambourine Man" version on Preflyte would have to concede that the bass riff on the officially released version owes much to the bass riff on"Room".
I cannot agree with the assertion that The Searchers influenced Harrison however. The vague reference to The Searchers circa 67 not being as "white" as their image portrays is interesting, is there another side to the track "Crazy Dreams" "B" Side of "Secondhand Dealer" which I make refernce to in"Searchers Sing Searchers"
Somehow I doubt it though!!

If you want to see the Searchers' influence on the Byrds, go no further than "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better", for the rip off of the opening cord run (albeit faster tempo) from "Needles and Pins". Further confirmation comes from the liner notes to Chris Hillman's solo Lp of a couple years back (the one with his version of "When You Walk in the Room") where he mentions how much they "borrowed" from the Searchers when he was in the Byrds.
hey,
that's actually my favorite, 'Crazy dreams', i mean. Maybe vocals are not 'first-rate' but it's funny. However, i suggest it's just a joke rather than a result of a thoughtful p-smoking. I mean, they might have tried it cause everybody around did but i doubt they went as far as writing under influence!

Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
