I was going to recommend King's X to you guys. Doug (or dUg as he goes by these days) Pinnick is awesome! He used to play a 12-string bass (still does sometimes) - like a regular 8-string but with each string tripled! They've got a couple of albums that aren't that great, but most of them are excellent. I recommend Gretchen Goes to Nebraska, Faith Hope Love, Dogman (good purchase Jacob!), Ear Candy, and Black Like Sunday. The new one, Ogre Tones, is supposed to be really good too, but I haven't been able to buy it yet. Some albums dUg does all the lead vocals and the other guys just do backing vocals, but originally both dUg and Ty Tabor (the guitarist) switched off on lead vocals. Oh, and dUg often splits his signal, combining sub-bass with distortion.
Here are some websites you can check out too:
official website
Ty Tabor's myspace - you can hear a couple of the new tunes
fan site - lots of info

Their new one is awesome! And yes, Doug does play the 12-string, but lately has been playing a lot of 4-string. One of my fave 12-string players.

I really liked their Style. It was kind of harder but wasnt just about guitar and all that. Its awesome. I like it. Im taking it to my metal band to let them hear today haha. See what they think.
I heard Ear Candy was one of the best too. I gotta find it. Chip told me about the band yesturday. So I picked up a album. Ill have to check out all the links later. I gotta get ready to head out. I over slept and I got practice in about an hour. Blah. Rushing sucks. Haha. Oh and im taking my stand up this time just for kicks

I think Derek Sherinian was in Platypus with Ty Tabor - he then left, and the band turned into Jelly Jam (with John Myung on bass and Rod Morgenstein of Dregs fame on drums), the first eponymous album of which is awesome!
And yes, Doug Pinnick is black and has had dreads at various points. He also had a crazy hairsprayed mohawk in the early days. The mohawk and the dreads come and go with the years. But the playing and sound are always great!

Here's an acquaintance of mine recorded a track using six different basses (overdubbed). None of them were Ricks, but I have to give the man props for pointing me towards the place where I found my white '93 4003, and for being a skilled player, and for just jumping on an idea and having fun with it. (and he's a fan of the band Self, to boot!)

Well I was told I should check this thread 'cause of King's X content.
My old band opened for KX many times during the'90s, both bands are/were from Texas and so crossed paths many times.
I spoke with Doug often, we're both lefties and both played Hamer 12s at the time. I had two and they were all I played then. Still have one, here 'tis:
