Josh: Please refresh your browser and give it another try. I have made more changes and have no idea why you should be getting popup ads. I would be grateful if you would let me know if you continue to see these adds.

I get porn pop-ups, too. Not just on the main page, but on every website I go to. I even get them on my email screen. I don't believe the porn has anything to do with Peter's site.

Perhaps try using a pop-up stopper program in conjunction with something like a Norton SystemWorks package.

With my current settings as they are, I get no pop-ups and all banner ads blocked.

http://www.download.com would be a good place to look if anyone is interested in testing any of these programs out.

I dont get any pop ups and I dont run anything other than the 'out of the box" applications.
It may be a problem with your ISp or the routing. It doesnt appear to be a Ric forum issue

While this topic will have a life of its own, if we let it, I thought that this link would be useful to understand and identify pop-up stealth software that we install without knowing. A big culprit is something called "Save Now." Got to your control panel to ADD/Remove Programs and uninstall it.

I keep my machine very vlean as I use it a lot. I usually reformat once a month to make sure. That web site imparticular was the only one giving me problems.

Peter has made some changes and now they are gone, and I must commend him for the quality of this site.

When I see pop-ups of that nature I usually relate them to the host web site as a way to make soem money, but in this case I believe it was a third party forcing their popups on the site.

thank you Peter for rectifying the situation

Josh, I have never, ever seen popups on the home page or any page on this site. The problem is not with this site.

I think it is time for this thread to stop. I already told you guys it had to be this site, and when peter said he "made more changes" the pop-ups went away. So obviously what ever he did corrected it.
I didnt mean to get everybody in such an uproar against me, I 'thought' the pop-ups were put there intentionally; and I even tried to edit my initial message to avoid this but I was too late and decidd it wasnt big enough deal to bother Peter with.

so quit beating a dead horse.

Josh,
This is not considered "Beating a dead horse." Obviously you had a quality concern about pornographic ads popping up, and it just so happens that other people, such as me, have the same problem. Nobody is against anybody here. It's just a matter of trying to figure out exactly where the problem is. Thank you, Josh, for bringing up a much needed quality concern. I sincerely hope you don't find anymore problems here.

I concur with Robert: it is important to communicate with others for the benefit of all; it doesn't matter whether it's actually the site or one's own computer that is source of the problem, so long as the situation is remedied. No one can be expected to know everything about everything, afterall!

For those who are unfamiliar with the shenanigans of the 'ad-purveyors' and their invasive programs, here is a good background article:

http://www.toejumper.net/newsletters/newsletter20.htm

And don't think problems don't happen even to the 'computer cognoscenti': a friend of mine in San Diego who worked for DEC and knows computers inside and out still managed to acquire a virus on one of his computers (even with an active anti-virus program running on it!), and it took both of us a lot of hours trying to get the system cleaned up (we still need to flash the BIOS to be sure that the virus isn't hiding there!).
It is better, of course, to know useless things than to know nothing. - Seneca
