Post by karl_pando »

is any rickenbacker model available with pearloid scratchplates and nameplates, instead of plain white?

He he what a beauty...but perloid scratch and nameplate would also be nice for my 4003....
Beside owning 14 guitars and basses and my own homestudio, what do I want more?

Pickguardian makes a pearloid replacement guard, but the trussrod cover would be the problem...

Ruby Red with perloid looks fantastico, in my book... much like Jeff's 4003S.

'Funkafize'?? Maybe 'funkysize'. No? Hehehe.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Some confusion here between pearloid and "lenticular".

You know those plastic cartoon things that show stop-motion animation when you tilt them or wiggle them? That's lenticular.

The LS has lenticular plastic pickguard and TRC. Lenticular is molded with very fine grooves in the plastic. Usually, lenticular plastic has straight grooves on one side. The plastic on LS has distorted, curved grooves on BOTH sides, and the interference pattern between the front grooves and the back grooves is what creates the dimensional effect.

Anybody got a few square feet of this stuff gathering dust? I'd sure like some...

Pearloid has pearl or mica powder dissolved in the acrylic resin. Pearloid acrylic is open stock at most sheet plastic suppliers.

Um, I guess the pickguard on my TQ is pearloid...

I had to have it made by Bass Parts Resource. I've left the TRC white. Jeff, is yours white all the way through? I could only find a W/B/W laminate.

Lindsay, you're saying that the above pickguard is a laminate?

One which is white all the way through is much cheaper to make.

The suppliers get crazy prices for laminated faux-tortoise shell and pearloid laminate (over $33.00 for a bit over a square foot), whereas pearloid acrylic (which is pearl all the way through) is around $7. I recently picked up a nice piece of pearloid scrap about 9" X 2 feet for $2.00 at my suppliers'.

Paul, I know that the LS has a different material, was just trying to get everyone's motor running! Image
Actually, when Kenny restored his, he made a TRC out of the same material as the LS body. Looks REALLY cool! Now if he could have gotten a light in THERE...how awesome would THAT be? Image

You got my motor started this morning, AP.

Thanks for the caffiene-like rush to the brain, Steve.
