My nuts hurt!

Post by rickfan60 »

Has anyone else notice sharp edges on their nuts? I picked up my 8er today and was a little surprised by the sharpness of the corners of the nut near the E strings. The darned thing has quite an edge and actually drew blood. It appears to be the factory nut because the fininsh is intact around the edges. I checked my other basses and found that some of them (the newer ones) also have some sharp corners. The older ones are rounded and smooth. I don't know how I did not notice this before. The edges come off very nicely with a fine file BTW.

I've got an '04 4003, and the nut edges aren't sharp at all. Hmmm . . . I think one of us got a fluke.

My 4004C nut has a bit of an edge at the E string corner but my 2030 is very smooth. The 5er has an edge near the B corner. But the 8er is pretty nasty all the way across. The older ones have rounded tops and no sharp edges.

My s8 and LK have sharp nuts.....but my Ci's nut is nice and smooth...... Image

If I wasn't so lazy I'd have fixed it with a file by now but I'd rather just complain about it.

Emery boards work well and don't threaten to jump off the nut as files will.

Your S8 is sharp too? RIC nuts usually have a gentile arch shape across the top. Most often with nicely rounded edges. My S8 nut is flat across the top with very square edges on all sides.

Ted, I think in order to avoid further potential injury, you need to send it to me as soon as possible. That thing is DANGEROUS! Image

I was thinking the same thing Steve. Let's get that safety hazard on a UPS truck right away! Image
