Neck thickness.

Post by ken_swearingen »

My 69 and my 21 fret both have what I feel is the perfect size neck I'm going to measure the neck on the 69 I bet its the same as the 70 21 fret.

Both D shaped.

Ds are always better feeling then Cs especially double Ds.

There is nothing like feeling double D's.

You have to have big hands with the D's or else you might as well just go to a C, you're wasting it.

I'd have to A-B them Ken, but I think I prefer the feel of a nice C. I probably have smaller hands than you, but I just like the way a C fits in my palm.

Maybe I don't know what you're talking about, but it seems as though my C64S has a D shaped neck whereas every other Rick I've ever played has a C shape including the handful of 60's Ricks I've played.

Yep...I'm not so picky about whether she's a nice FG, a MG, or a JG...but I'm more of a C man myself.

Im not really sure what a D is like. Iv probly played some and not noticed the difference. I hardly even noticed the V necks I played. I just adjust without thinking about it. Im the same way with scale lengths. Even on fretless oddly enough I guess.

I like my C tho. Maybe it just depends on what your playing tho.

Actually a "C" would be a 4003 neck sort of baseball bat like round, a C shape.

A "D" is more elongated flatter but thinner from front of fretboard to back of the neck.Sort of shaped like a D.

That's what I thought you meant, Ken. My C64S is VERY D shaped. All of my other Ricks are C shaped. I prefer the C's.

Maybe I just wasn't paying attention or something, but I didn't notice a D shape on any of the 60's Ricks I've played. In fact...one late 60's Rick that I played just a few days ago felt just like one of my 4001's from the 70's.

I've just sourced a 60s Fender Jazz, the neck is the thinest, ever.... it is remarkable.

I played a 69 F*nd*r P yesterday, still doesn't compare to the 1999, which wins hands down on playability

As much as I like Rics, until they decide to drastically remodel the treble pickup assembly on the 4000-series, it'll never be as playable as the Fender J/P.

Kevin - 1968 Jazz, Sunburst, it's a nice sweet-sounding player. I'll get some pics up, soon-ish. It looks just like yours. Image

Here are some measurements from mine...

The 68 with the "guitar" type neck is 16mm from fretboard to back of neck. The profile is noticeably flatter than all the other basses I have, and the bass is very light.

The 67 body which has been sanded everywhere is actually the same but feels ever so slightly fuller.

The 64 RM is 17mm and feels the same as the 67.

The 73 FL is 19-20mm and feels like a club...
