I copied that from the source mentioned ... I can't guarantee it is accurate ... and some details were left out ... but it is a good outline of the 4001 history ...

Also, MG was definitely an option on 4001s before '65. There's a gorgeous '63 pictured in the Smith book.

Hey Joey, You're right about the Star Stowe edition of Playboy. I recall sneaking a peek of my Dad's copy in 1978. I bought my own copy of the same magazine last year on eBay....I just had to have the centerfold with that great body and excellent curves. Star Stowe wasn't bad either! Image Image. Paul Boyer's book will be the gold standard for future Rick bass players/collectors for years to come. One day all of you will be able to say that you were there when it was being written. Many will be able to say they contributed to the book in some way. Everyone here (including you lurkers!) should be supportive of Paul's efforts.

"... What about the infamous 'hump' pickguard? When did that start?"

The question is when will it stop!

Quote: 82 is first year for 4003 .

This is incorrect. 4003's came out in 1980. I have one. Image

my 79 is the only year I have seen with this binding scheme:

...and I thought it was late '73 - early '74 that the hi gain started replacing the toaster in the neck position.

Exactly... 1974.

It certainly wasn't 1972.

Yes, I know changes is about all we discuss here, but if we had a correct timeline of changes we could discuss other things?

Sorry: Star Stowe appeared in the February 1977 issue of Playboy, and the toaster pickup on the 4001 model was discontinud in late 1973.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.
