Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Jeff,
Just curious. I have never played a five string bass. Do you have to re-think your whole approach to playing bass? Is the fifth (lightest gauge) string tuned to B? What are some of the advantages to playing a five string? Why not just go to a six string bass? As I said I am just curious.

Brian, that'll get him up to 7,000 posts!
It's tuned the same as a regular (4-string) bass, except the lowest string is a B. It really helps out with a lot of the modern music, a lot of bands de-tune or play songs with a really low note in it, and you can get it with the low B.
Sometimes you can make a song sound different by going to the low "C" instead of the usual one.

That's one of the reasons I asked him. He could fill his boots with posts on this subject. The other reason is because, to be honest, I did not know the reason someone would want a 5 string bass.
As a guitar player and part time bass player I have never ever considered owning a 5 string just as I have never considered a 7 string guitar. I don't have anything against those instruments. I have just never ever stopped to consider how they might be put to practical use.
