New 4x8... 4003S = wow

OK, I've been a bit of a F*nder b*astard lately.

I use Ashdown cabs, for a while I've been utilising two 1'15s... friend of mine had a 4'8 of exactly the same design/build. He plays a Precision and wanted to ditch his 4'8, he uses flats, doesn't like it - wants a single '15.

We swapped, I took it home - rigged it, no compression, effects, nothing... both PU's, balanced pots - I was astounded, and I mean genuinely shocked at how great the -S sounded... it is the best, the best Ric I've ever heard in my posession. Even my flat-loving Ric hating P-playing friend said: "Good lord, that does sound fierce, doesn't it? What a tone!"

Growl, bite - DEEP bottom, the Chris Squire sound on a plate...

I am genuinely shocked and filled with glee. The 4'8 seems to have brought it to life, and the '15 still provides the thud... I hope I can be welcomed back to the fold.

I use Ashdown ABM 500 amps and 10" ABM cabs, they sound great. I have just got a Steinberger EUB and I understand that the 4x8 is the match made in heaven with an EUB.

I have a Traynor 9x8 cab. Great sound. Solid punch, with a nice bottom. Don't use it though, Ampeg SVT 4x12 for me.

Henny, you can be welcomed back to the fold.

Just don't diss 4004's...

I've wanted to try a cab using 8's, but I would guess that you'd need 4 of them. I did see a review of some Detroit based botique shop that made a 2x8 that got rave reviews...

I did a little bit of design calculations, and couldn't seen to find a configuration that could have a low enough resonant frequency, but then again, I'm no acoustical engineer. Still, the small size (of a 2x8) is enticing.

At 30 kg, that Ashdown 4x8 isn't exactly light, but for what it probably punches with it's probably good "bang for the pound".

For a second I thought that said 30 POUNDS and not KILOS. I was like, "Whoa, that's LIGHT!" Alas, it was not to be. I may look into a 4x8 if I ever buy an actual bass amp. Right now, the combo has me hooked, though.

Glad you found some killer tone to go along with your killer S, Henny. I wish there were a good Ashdown dealer near me. I played through one of their 300W 1X15 combos a while back that sounded great. What head are you running?
