Hi-gains in a Strat?

Post by aristeas »

I'm a fan of the hi-gain sound (love that punch and sparkle!) and I'm trying to reproduce it in a 96 Strat Plus with a new pup in the bridge position. Rather than go nuts with the router I'm looking for a Strat style pup which has a similar sound.

Can anyone give me the output stats for the hi-gain? And any advice on an aftermarket pup with similar tone/output?

I think the G&L MFD pickups come really close.

Hi-gains are a totally different design from the Strat pickups, and part of that is the shape of the coil... Hi-gains are wider aperture pickups. I think it would be hard to get a strat type pickup to sound like a high gain.

some strats are routed out for a humbucker ... so a ric pickup might fit in that hole ...

actually a ric hb1 might sound good on a strat ...

I was thinking of putting sic pickups on my sg ...

A RIC pickup will fit in a humbucker/P90 sized hole, but the outer edge of the pickup will not come up through the hole.

This is not a problem, however, as there isn't enough space between the strings and the pickup to raise it this high anyway.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I've seen a Tele Thinline with toasters before. I'll try to dig up a pic.

If you are looking for an aftermarket pup...try O.C.Duff. He's great and can wind just about anything.

Thanks guys - I'll definitely check out the G&L MFDs, and I'll let you all know how it works out.

I have a picture of Randy Bachman onstage with BTO in the mid-1970s with a white Strat that has a toaster in the middle position. I would post a pic of it, but its in an issue of Circus Magazine and I don't have a scanner. I always thought that the guitars on the song "Let It Ride" sounded quite jangly. I wonder if this particular guitar was used on that song?
