Christmas Song with Rickenbacker

Post by scoobster28 »

So, I was in line at Eckerds buying christmas cards when I hear "I want a new Rickenbacker guitar" "And a fender bass" on the radio! IT was the lyrics to some christmas song. The clerk thought I was a bit crazy. Anyways, a guy is singing the song and the end line was "Its Christmas Again", and it repeated quite a bit.

Any ideas the name of the song or the artist?

I believe it's Tom Petty. I have it on a rock'n roll Christmas CD that we play every year around this time. He actually pronounces "Rickenbacker" correctly.

Yeah, I am pretty sure you are referring to the Petty song... I think he says... "a Rickenbacker guitar... Maybe a Fender Bassman [the amp]." Pretty cool, huh?

TP and the HB's video for "The Waiting" was among two or three that got me into Ricks... (That one and "Cuts Like A Knife").

When my paternal great-great-grandfather immigrated from Germany to the U.S.A. in the early 1800s, he changed (anglicized) the spelling of the family name from Klaassen to Clauson, but the pronunciation remained the same (claw-sun). A German would (mis)pronounce Clauson as clou- (as in clout) -zen.

The guitar company's owner was distantly related to the WWI flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker (pronounced backer).

I don't care I call mine Ricken"bach"ers!

It's a great song and one that helps get our family into the Christmas spirit every year, too.

The song can be found on Volume 2 of the "A Very Special Christmas" series. The song also helps jumpstart any good wish list when people ask what you want for Christmas. Any list that includes a Rickenbacker guitar, Fender bassman amps and a Chuck Berry songbook is already covering the basics. Throw in "World Peace" and a truce between Paul and Yoko and you've "got-r-done"!

XTC did an X-mas song with Dave Gregory playing his Rick 12-string, "Thanks for Christmas". It's a great song that ranks up there with their best songs, in my opinion. They released it under the "Three Wise Men" alter-ego name, much like what they did with the Dukes of Stratosphear. Interestingly, they did the X-mas tune just before the Dukes project, and it sounds kind of like the Byrds & Beatles doing a holiday song together.
